About Me
My Music Journey
I was born into a musical family, resulting in daily exposure to music of many forms. At the age of four, I began formal private piano lessons and continued with this teacher until I was 18. During this time, I joined our church’s worship team (of which my father was the worship leader) as the keyboardist and organist -I continue to be involved on the worship team. I began playing for weddings and funerals and participated in many recitals and Federation competitions. After graduating high school, I began taking lessons with another teacher with experience in several different techniques, jazz, and ear training. My music education exploded under this new teacher and I continued with her for about 4 years. At around the age of 16, I began taking on a few students here and there and have continued growing my home studio until now at the age of 32.
Throughout my teaching career, I’ve developed a passion for teaching students of all ages. Using a combination of method books, classic repertoire, and engaging games, I love watching as the lines begin to connect and my students begin to take ownership of their music education. Once I’m able to get my students to take stake in the music they’re learning -my job shifts to coming alongside my students, giving them the tools and guidance they require to succeed in the music they’re creating.
My teaching philosophy is to equip students with the tools they need to succeed in the ways THEY want when it comes to music. For this reason, I don’t involve my students in competitions, or other high-pressure situations. I will help my students find performing opportunities as they’d like. However, instead of teaching my students to compete and perform, I believe more in teaching them to develop their love and passion for music. In some students, this may involve competing, but it’s usually not the case. My goal as a teacher is to give my students the tools and education they need to develop their passion and love of music, long after I end my teaching time with them.
